movies

In other news, released this week on DVD is Hostel Part 2 and Home of The Brave, which would make an excellent double feature in purgatory. You know something is up with the movie business when the DVD I am most excited about is Meet the Robinsons. Also, I swear to whatever higher power there is, if American Gangster is crappy there will be hell to pay. Also, Martian child with John Cusack looks so awkwardly cute, that is almost makes up for Must Love Dogs… almost.

What is it about our generation that seems to pump out some of the worst movies? this year alone we’ve had gems like Captivity, The Comebacks, Accepted, I Know Who Killed Me, and recently The Heartbreak Kid. Between the dimwitted crude unfunny comedies and torture porn, I almost squee with glee whenever there comes a movie worth watching, like Across the Universe. I think of it this way: Every generation seems to be defined by a movie (Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, The Breakfast Club), and I hope and pray that our generation isn’t defined by Balls of Fury.

Hollywood is far past its golden years, now relying on special effects and big names instead of producing quality film with great acting. If you dare fight me on big names not being a good actor I have two words for you: Keanau Reeves. He is making millions of dollars a film while some actors like Ben Foster and Lukas Haas are given small roles and trying still trying to make names for themselves. Studios are relying so much on big bangs (both in special effects and gratuitous sex scenes) that they forget that this too is an art. So many people have seen Marlon Brando scream out “Stella!” or Cary Grant captivate his leading lady along with everyone else in the audience after all of these years, but do you honestly think that we have gems like that? Case in point: What movie won the 1990 Academy Award for Best Picture?

By the way, the answer is Dances with Wolves, but I personally lost all faith in the Academy for the fact that they gave the Best Picture award to Forrest Gump over The Shawshank Redemption, not to mention Best Actor to Tom Hanks over Morgan Freeman. Don’t even get me started on the fact that Julia Roberts won Best Actress over Ellen Burstyn…

Purusing over the coming soon’s for movies, I see that the new it thing in Hollywood is superhero movie, it’s not just for geeky people anymore! Now, note that most men have probably seen Fantastic Four to see Jessica Alba in a skintight bodysuit, but the producing studios don’t hold that against them. Batman, Superman, X-men, Fantastic Four, and now Iron Man which I am unashamed to say I am counting down the days to its release.

There is another kind of movie: the teen comedy. We love to get together, laugh, and reminisce of the good old days of teenage embarrassment.

Finally! There is now a movie that perfectly hybrids the two genres. May I present Fast Times and Hero High.
