Entertainment

I probably should have started out by introducing myself, but I guess nothing is ever too late. I am a student at Rowan University. My major is Writing Arts and Elementary Education, with a certification in Special Education. I enjoy learning about children’s thought processes, and how to teach them so they can be successful. In addition to my education, I am a manager at a clothing boutique. We only sell white and black clothing, which I feel is very unique. So I am into fashion. I love clothes! I also love to travel, as well as cook when I have the free time. Although, through the years my free time is becoming less and less.

Moreover, this blog process has been interesting, however very informative. I feel I gained a lot of knowledge about blogs. Before this semester I would hear the word “blog,” but that meant nothing to me. Now I know what it is all about, and how it can add to my knowledge. It is sharing ideas with the world, and gaining insight from the world. It is actually a very neat thing. I can write down my feelings and share them, and then get feedback. In addition, I can read others thoughts and feelings, then gain knowledge from them. Basically it is a huge sharing bank. Everyone puts their thoughts and ideas together. It is kind of like the expression “two heads are better than one.” Many of my teachers would say that, to get use to work in groups.

Here is an amazing dip that I would like to share with you. It is perfect for this time of year, with football season in full swing.

1 can of refried beans

1 container of sour cream

1 packet of taco seasoning

1 container of pre-made guacomole

2 tomatoes chopped

6 green onions chopped

1 can of chopped olives

5 jalopenos chopped

2 blocks of shredded cheddar chesse

This is a layering dip, so you first start with the refried beans. Spread it flat onto a large plate. Then take the taco seasoning and the sour cream. Mix them together. Then spread that layer on top of the beans. Then take the guacomole and spread on top of the sour cream. Then layer the tomatoes on top of the guacomole. Next add the chopped olives on top on the tomatoes. Then add cheddar cheese on top of the tomatoes. Next layer the green onions on top of the cheddar cheese. Lastly add the jalopenos on top of the green onions. Then serve with tostitos chips. The scoops work great. This is a huge hit for football. My boyfriend and his roomates devour it. Enjoy!

In other news, released this week on DVD is Hostel Part 2 and Home of The Brave, which would make an excellent double feature in purgatory. You know something is up with the movie business when the DVD I am most excited about is Meet the Robinsons. Also, I swear to whatever higher power there is, if American Gangster is crappy there will be hell to pay. Also, Martian child with John Cusack looks so awkwardly cute, that is almost makes up for Must Love Dogs… almost.

I must confess I am addicted to facebook. I am sure many of you can relate. I think it is amazing how it socially connects everyone. I know I have found friends from grade school on facebook that I probally would never talk to if it was not for facebook. I love you how can hear about how their lives are going, and who broke up with who. I think it has changed the social world. I find myself on facebook for hours on end just viewing pictures of my friends, or seeing what people are up to. I truely think this was a witty and amazing invention.

I have a confession to make: I am addicted to Postsecret.com. When it showed up as a reading assignment I almost jumped for joy because finally it was a subject I knew about. It’s on my favorites links, I have certain ones saved, I even own the coffee table book. It is a borderline obsession but I can’t help myself. I feel a sense of connection with these anonymous people, and sometimes I feel like I can connect with what they writ as their secret. I don’t even have to mention the adorable popart on each card is enough to make anyone stop and look. I think that PostSecret is such an incredible idea; you can get a deep dark secret off of your chest without really telling anyone. I will admit that I sent a postcard to PostSecret, and I felt such a sense of relief when it was out.

At the same time, it is kind of sick to get entertainment off of other people’s secrets, but aren’t tabloid magazines the same thing? Only difference is the tabloids aren’t anywhere near as anonymous. We get entertainment from learning about other people’s private lives. So let us feed that want of privacy invasion without really having people invade our privacy. I know I would feel safer sending in that postcard than telling a friend who might leak your secret. Besides, someone else out in the world can read your postsecret and learn that they aren’t alone. Personally, I think it is a win win situation.

It happened tonight when I was watching House. The doctors were trying to think of a diagnosis and before I knew it I was yelling at the tv “It’s environmental! It’s drug related! Put her on steroids!” etc. I now have become one of them… a Primetime PhD. A Primetime PhD is someone who watches so many shows of a certain context (medical, forensic, crime, etc)t hat they believe that they might as well have a degree in the field. Now this might cause a few issues when someone screams, “Is there a doctor in the house?” and a Primetime PhD answers. People, just because you watch ER nonstop does not mean you can do a tracheotomy.

There needs to be a rehab for this, or at least make sure the shows are credible enough so that Primetime PhD’s won’t look like too much of idiots. Although I am completely aware that using House MD or CSI as a source of reference, you have to admit it is tempting.

What is it about our generation that seems to pump out some of the worst movies? this year alone we’ve had gems like Captivity, The Comebacks, Accepted, I Know Who Killed Me, and recently The Heartbreak Kid. Between the dimwitted crude unfunny comedies and torture porn, I almost squee with glee whenever there comes a movie worth watching, like Across the Universe. I think of it this way: Every generation seems to be defined by a movie (Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, The Breakfast Club), and I hope and pray that our generation isn’t defined by Balls of Fury.

Hollywood is far past its golden years, now relying on special effects and big names instead of producing quality film with great acting. If you dare fight me on big names not being a good actor I have two words for you: Keanau Reeves. He is making millions of dollars a film while some actors like Ben Foster and Lukas Haas are given small roles and trying still trying to make names for themselves. Studios are relying so much on big bangs (both in special effects and gratuitous sex scenes) that they forget that this too is an art. So many people have seen Marlon Brando scream out “Stella!” or Cary Grant captivate his leading lady along with everyone else in the audience after all of these years, but do you honestly think that we have gems like that? Case in point: What movie won the 1990 Academy Award for Best Picture?

By the way, the answer is Dances with Wolves, but I personally lost all faith in the Academy for the fact that they gave the Best Picture award to Forrest Gump over The Shawshank Redemption, not to mention Best Actor to Tom Hanks over Morgan Freeman. Don’t even get me started on the fact that Julia Roberts won Best Actress over Ellen Burstyn…

Purusing over the coming soon’s for movies, I see that the new it thing in Hollywood is superhero movie, it’s not just for geeky people anymore! Now, note that most men have probably seen Fantastic Four to see Jessica Alba in a skintight bodysuit, but the producing studios don’t hold that against them. Batman, Superman, X-men, Fantastic Four, and now Iron Man which I am unashamed to say I am counting down the days to its release.

There is another kind of movie: the teen comedy. We love to get together, laugh, and reminisce of the good old days of teenage embarrassment.

Finally! There is now a movie that perfectly hybrids the two genres. May I present Fast Times and Hero High.
